i believe that kangi means either crow or raven. duta means scarlet or red. so it could be red crow/red raven, or scarlet crow/scarlet raven.

I find it rather interesting that you allege that Julia Oldman was married to this Kangiduta, yet you know little or nothing about her or her family history. Dawnday, who were Lucy Carpenter's parents? the witnesses at Two Crows probate hearings mentioned that he only had a sister, Hapan, and that she died young. I don't doubt you, what i am wondering is if she was his half sister? His Father was married three times, and only produced Two Crow and the sister, just mentioned, with his first spouse.

I have a Kangiduta in my family tree. He was married to my great-great grandmother Tateahanhiyayewin. They had 6 children; infant daughter, name unknown; Hapan or Louisa Redday (dau); Sunkaduta (son), Mazakoyakewin (dau); Sam Crow (son); Samuel Adams (son). Kangiduta died in 1867. His wife than married Wasusnake or Mahpiyawakan. She died in 2-21-1911. Please let me know if this is the same Kangiduta you are looking for. Thank you!

grmw7 welcome to our website. what a coincidence you should mention Kangiduta's wife. Tateahnhiyayewin was also married to Ptewakannajin(holy Stnading Buffalo or Cow) and they had a daughter Anna Hunka Siyaka aka Kuns'i is'ta zi(honorary one). Anna later married William Siyaka in Graffe MN. anna's first hubby was Frank Jette Stay and they had three children: Frank Jr., Josephine Stay-Frenier(Augustin?Augustus) and a daughter that died very young.

1890 Crow Creek Census has Two Crow listed at age 46, wife Wastena(Pretty)A ge58, and a son Walks with Stone(Tunkayuhana) age 8. I also show him in a family chart with wife Little Day and two children: Wears stone When He Walks and fine Yellow Earth. I suggest you get Kanginupa's probate/Heirship papers, as well as John Stone's.

i have been unable to find anything thing else on kangiduta, probably because he died so young. but yesterday i found the name on a census taken in 1887 in lake traverse. that listed kangiduta as indain name and white name as sam adams. but it turned out to be my kangiduta's son, who apparently took on his fathers name. i have found the name sam adams in other areas but i ruled him out as kangidutas son because ours was too young. now i'm thinking our kaniduta might have been called sam adams also. anyone know anything about this?

Kungiduta was married to Tateahanhiyayewin. He was murdered in Washington DC in March 1867 while part of a Sisseton Wahpeton delegation. His name means "Scarlet Crow" or some people interpret it as "Red Crow." His English name was Samuel Adams. He is buried in Veblen, with a marker paid for by Congress in recognition of "services and good work" as a scout for the US Army.
Their son, also called Samuel Adams married Justine LaFramboise about 1892 (her first husband was Frank Moran with whom she had three children). Sam and Justine had 10 children, only five of whom were living in 1910. One of their children was Emily Adams, my grandmother, who married Caleb Hill in 1928, and Christian Westerman, Sr. in 1934. My uncle, Floyd Westerman, honors our greatgrandfather, the original Kungiduta, by carrying his name as "Red Crow."
I also have a copy of the 1888 General Land Office certificate that gave Tateahanhiyayewin 160 acres in Dakota Territory according to the 1887 provision, if anyone is interested.

Fantastic information!! That is just the sort of connection that only oral history or families of an ancestor can give. Now I know very well, who he is and who his family is. thank you very much. This is a family with a very rich and interesting history. How is he related to Lazarus Adams? I have picture of him if you wish to see it. Incredible picture of him in headdress. They say he is a descendant of Sleepy Eye. This is my neices family and I would love a copy of what ever you might like to share. email: TTordsen@aol.com
